Are you making up the right word for that?

People make up new words all the time. Or, they change the meaning of a word actually in use to fit their need.

Sometimes, it makes sense and can be integrated seamlessly.

Sometimes, it just doesn't work and you feel like Mean Girls' Gretchen insisting that "fetch" will eventually become the it word.

Either way, if you're going to play with expanding language and definitions, you should make sure you know what you're playing with.

Think about the words you are adapting to see where they come from. Does their origin match the theme of what you're making up? Does a matching word need less of a leap to mean what you want it to?

Words have history. Some of it matches the theme of our changing world. If you're looking for a new word, start by looking at the past and what might work from there.
