You need to start your novel off right. You need to grab your reader's attention and make them want to turn to the next page. You need to make the effort.
Mostly, though, you need to make sure that your beginning is relevant.
Don't start with a character that will never be seen again, unless what is happening to them is key to your plot.
Don't start with your protagonist in a situation that has nothing to do with what is about to happen to them.
Don't start with a time, place, or planet that is not related to the rest of your story.
Start your story with a bang, but more importantly, start it with a relevant bang.
