Everyone loves an underdog and a redemption story.
Can everyone be redeemed, however?
Not necessarily.
You might never be able to get your audience on the side of a rapist. You might not be able to get readers to care about someone who kills children. You likely aren't going to convince people to read hundreds of pages about someone who tortures kittens for the joy of the pain.
When you're creating a character that you want your readers to sympathize with, put some deep thoughts into whether there can be sympathy for your character. Unless you have a really good motive, the character might not be worth trying to make sympathetic.
