Following the submission rules

It's natural to want to push back on rules.

Sometimes, there are just too many to follow them all. Sometimes, they don't make sense. Sometimes, you feel like they are stifling your creativity.

But often, they're there for a reason.

If you're thinking about breaking a rule when submitting your writing, take a minute and ask yourself why the rule was created.

A word count is likely not there just to shut you up. An editor has likely learned how much they need to read before they know if a piece speaks to them.

Refusing attachments isn't just to stop you from using all the fonts and inserts that you might want to slide in, but might be protecting servers from viruses.

It might be tempting to go against rules just to show that you can or to demonstrate how creative you are, but first consider why those rules might be there. No point shooting yourself in the foot just to be a rebel.
