Horror novels need to scare people. They need to have them on the edge of their seats. They need to compel them to turn the page by making the next event something they have to know about.
You know what the scariest thing is for a lot of people?
Something that could happen to them.
A home invasion. A mugging. Being trapped somewhere…
These are all things that scare people, because they can relate to them.
Your horror novel doesn't have to centre around these fears, but they are good elements to include to have your readers relate to the scares your protagonist is facing.
Real-life fears. Drop them in where you can, and see how scared you get.
