The cliché is there

I didn't realize that my writing was full of clichés until I had someone else read my work. Suddenly, they were able to point out expressions and phrases and allusions that had been written thousands of times before.

To me, they helped paint a clear picture. To a reader, they are lazy writing that they have seen before.

Clichés will no doubt spring up in your writing, particularly in a first draft when you are just trying to get your story out. Take the time to throw them out when you're doing your reviews. Find a new way to paint those pictures.
