I know very little about history. All those dates and events jumble together. And, while I find history interesting, I'm not winning any history trivia contests anytime soon.
That's not a problem, until I'm writing about things that happened in the long ago past.
Even when writing fiction, I (and you) need to find out a little bit about what was happening back then to write something realistic. Writing about witch hunts after they were no longer happening will need some explanation. Giving a woman all the freedom in the world when she couldn't even enter a bar is not going to be believable.
You don't need to be a history buff to write a story set in the past. You should do a little research to make your story realistic, however. Even if you will most likely forget all the information you discovered as soon as you write "The end."
