How to make your narrator a trustworthy liar

People lie all the time. There are plenty of reasons to do it. Sometimes you want to spare someone's feelings. Sometimes you want to delay the truth. Sometimes you want to give yourself an advantage.

The problem is, when you lie about things, you are generally seen as a liar.

The same can be true of your narrators.

If your narrator lies to someone in your story, your readers will most likely wonder why they should be trusted. If your narrator lies to their spouse or friends, why wouldn't they lie to your readers?

If your narrator has to lie, make sure that your readers know that they are lying and that they understand the motivation. Make sure that they don't feel that they are being lied to as well. Make sure that they think they are part of the lie so they don't doubt everything else your narrator says. Make sure your narrator is a trustworthy liar.
