Manage the Action

Your story needs constant action to remain interesting. If you have a scene where nothing happens and the plot doesn't advance, you don't actually have a scene. You have extra words that aren't necessary.

It's important to understand, however, that not all action is equal. Sometimes your characters discover a clue. Sometimes they're chased by the villain. Sometimes they encounter someone that will eventually—surely after many misunderstandings and tears—become the love of their life.

Not all action is created equal, and in order to keep your readers interested in the ones you are describing, make sure to change them up. Quick and slow. Mysterious and obvious. Emotional and superficial.

Manager the action in your novel to keep your readers riding the ebb and flow you're creating.
