Attention spans

I don't have any kids, but I know some young people, and the thing that they try to explain to me over and over again, is that things are too long today. Movies are too long. TV shows are too long. And books are definitely too long.

Even when they sit next to me and scroll through social media, they like videos and move on without even watching to the end, too impatient to give the screen their attention for an entire 30 seconds.

What does that mean for the book industry? What is the chance that someone is going to get through what you write if they don't want anything beyond one page?

Well, that depends on what you write. You can still get their attention, but you have to work to keep it.

Make sure your characters are engaging. Make sure that your story is enticing. Try playing with chapter and scene length to see if there is anywhere you can cut or separate.

Attention spans are getting shorter and shorter. Is there anything you need to do in your writing to keep appealing to the audience of today?
