How much do you notice pronouns?
Once upon a time, people writing nonfiction used male pronouns when writing. He did this. His idea must be great. They will talk to him…
The singular they has come and provided another option. Some people still use "he or she." When reading about writing, I see a lot of "she" from both men and women authors. Some people like to alternate so that they aren't giving either gender preferences.
Which is best?
If you have a style guide that you must follow, that will obviously be best. But, if you're just writing for yourself, it is truly up to you. Do what feels right.
Just make sure you do it consistently. Any other choice you make is completely right for you.
