Nothing seems to be secret anymore. With social media making international communications incredibly easy, everyone seems to know everyone's business.
This is true for the real world, and it should be true for any modern novel you are writing.
You can't expect your characters to have a dark past that no one knows or can find out about. You can't expect your characters to be accused of something without that impact everyone's opinion of them. And you can't expect that these opinions will not impact your character.
People have gotten fired because of their inappropriate public actions. People have been shamed for photos they took ten years ago. People have had to publicly apologize for a situation that they never thought would become public.
Public opinion has an impact on the lives of people. Think about your characters, their reputations, and how it's impacting their lives.
