Sounding fancy

The goal in writing fiction is not to sound fancy. You have a story you want to share and you want to share it with words that paint a picture. You're not supposed to write with the goal of proving to people that you're smart or of impressing readers with your vocabulary.

However, some of your characters might talk fancy.

They might be trying to make themselves sound smarter. They might be mixing up their words in trying to do so. They might be confusing everyone around them or never getting to their point because of this.

Your goal shouldn't be to write fancy, but every now and then, you want to bring out your best words to make a point through a characer's words. Keep your best vocabulary for then!
