Scaring readers can be hard. No matter what world you create, they're still at home, most likely relaxed in their favourite chair with their drink and snack of choice.
So, sometimes you have to help those readers understand how scary something is.
Use your characters—all of them—to help you do this.
When the fright comes along, is your character frozen in place? Have they lost their voice to scream? Do they feel their skin prickle?
Like a yawn, being scared can be contagious. Show scared to create scared.
