There are some grammar rules that are optional. There are some rules that feel antiquated and you choose to break. There are some that might just not work for whatever you happen to be writing. There are also some rules that divide experts and that leave you with a decision to make.
That's fine. Your writing, your rules. Do what you like.
But do it consistently.
If you decide that you love the Oxford comma, apply it to all your sentences. If you capitalize all words in subheadings, apply it to all subheadings. If you write thoughts in italics, write all thoughts in italics.
You can choose your own rules for your own writing. Just choose your rules decisively and then stick to them throughout your entire piece.
