People go after stupid things all the time.
They're blinded by love or the shiny or an idea they fixed in their minds years before they understood what they would really need in life.
So, it isn't impossible that your characters are going to want something that isn't worthy of their attention.
If you want to satisfy your readers, however, give your protagonist an achievement that is worthy of them. Even if they want the wrong thing, make sure that they attain the right one and that everyone can appreciate their success (should success be right for your character).
Whatever your character wants, give them what you need to satisfy your story when the end comes.
