Edit in order

There are lots of steps to a good edit because there are a lot of things that you need to do.

You need to make sure the story flows. You need to make sure there are enough details for your readers to understand what you're writing. You need to make sure you haven't made any spelling mistakes.

There are a lot of things you need to do.

For your sake, do them in a logical order.

There is no sense in checking your grammar first when there's a good chance that you're going to change half your words as you fix a major plot hole. It isn't useful to check your punctuation before you check that you need every sentence. No need to make sure you have been consistent in spelling if you have to rewrite a number of scenes that aren't realistic.

Start with the big edits and work your way to the minute. Otherwise, you’ll be making your editing process much longer and more frustrating than it needs to be.
