We like to think that we're all really smart and intuitive, but sometimes, we're too close to the things around us. Sometimes, answers are right under our nose and we don't realize it.
In your writing, don't hesitate to have the problem be too close to your protagonist for them to notice it.
Maybe their spouse is a killer. Maybe their parent is a sociopath. Maybe their mentor is actually using them for some horribly dark plot.
Bad people are all around us and we don't always realize it. Don't hesitate to make the villain of your story someone close to your main characters.
