The rule is consistency

Some people like the Oxford comma and some don't.

Some people put uppercase letters on a lot of words, while some save that for the start of new sentences.

Some people use British spelling and some use American.

None of these things are wrong. They're preferences.

Unless you're writing for someone else, you can choose your preferences and go forth with them.

The one rule you should follow, however, is consistency.

Don't start a novel by separating points of views with a row of stars and then stop halfway through. Don't use British spelling for one chapter and American spelling for the rest. Don't ignore the choices you've made and then hope that you've been consistent.

You can make your own choices in your story. Just make those choices consistent.
