There are some extremely long novels out there that are epics. There are novels that become more intriguing when extended versions are put out. There are really long books that are some of the most famous classics in the world.
That doesn't mean that a novel needs to have a lot of words to be considered good or taken seriously.
For every extended novel that is amazing, there's a short story or novella that is as good, if not better. For every long work, there is a short one.
You don't need to write a lot of words to be taken seriously. In fact, if you are adding words just in the hope to reach some magical length that will make your novel "official," you are likely adding useless words that will annoy your readers.
Write your story well. Unless you are hired to write a specific number of words, having the write number of words will come from writing the best story possible.
