Reasons to be Alone

No man is an island, they say. And neither are your characters.

Most humans are born with an instinct to be near others. People can be driven to survive alone or driven to isolate themselves, but they are rarely born wanting to be alone.

If your character finds themselves alone, chances are that they are looking for some kind of human contact, or at least some kind of contact with a living entity. If they are looking to distance themselves from the world, there should be a reason that is making them seek out this hermitage.

You can write about a character who wants nothing to do with anyone, but make sure you give them a reason for being that way. Otherwise, that character might not be understood or resonate with anyone. Which, while it might be the way your character wants it, might not be the way you do.
