And the Award Goes To…

There are a number of criteria one can consider when selecting a book.

Depending on my mood, I might choose a book based on author, recommendation, length, subject, location… hell, I’ve even picked books based on the cover. (Also how I often pick wine, though I am considerably more versed in literature than I am in wine.)

I do know, however, of the people I could qualify as book snobs who only read books that have won prizes.

Well, good for them.

I’m not saying this is a bad way of choosing literature.  Hey, it’s recognized literature and I understand that you only have so much time in the day to dedicate to reading. That’s fine.

I’ll pass however, because that would be like only watching movies that have won awards.  You’d be missing a lot of good movies.

You’d be missing movies from acclaimed actors and directors. You’d be missing movies in your favourite genres and from your favourite scriptwriters.  You’d be missing movies that everyone else has seen and is talking about.

I like Jann Arden’s books of thoughts and blogs.  I like Louis-José Houde’s books with the text from his last comedy tour and whatever other thoughts popped into his mind on the road.  I like the Christmas books that are twenty pages long and don’t rhyme.

There is so much literature out there to love.  Why wait for someone to tell you you’re going to like it?  Take a chance.  You’ll either hate it and have something to complain about, or love it and be impressed with your ability to choose a great book with no help.

You might even be scooping the next award-nominee list when announcing your new favourite.
